Whilst coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis, Alice discovers her diary from 1988. In it, she is 14 and obsessed with a boy named Jamie. Now, her daughter Audrey is 14 years old and has a major crush on Cameron at school. When she finds out that her mother is seriously ill, Audrey is torn between spending time with her mum or putting all of her focus on Cameron and his sick dad. The reader is taken back to the 80s and begins to see that this mother and daughter have much more in common than they see themselves.
