One Breath is a testimony of the experiences of a Western student of the ancient discipline of Shodo, a path of spiritual endeavour that originated in Taoism and flowered in Zen. The book follows the writer's first four years of study with a Japanese master calligrapher, intertwining scenes from the lessons and daily practice with glimpses of her inner journey. The texts are paired with calligraphy and ink paintings done by her teacher, Kazuo Ishii, immersing the reader in an authentic experience of traditional Shodo.
