Democracy as we have come to know it is principally associated with the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle. The accepted view is that the idea of democracy originated with the Greeks and that democracy is therefore European in origin. In a narrow sense, this is true; however, in a wider sense, this conception is misleading and needs to be corrected by further analytic distinctions. First written for an Ethiopian audience, Philosophical Essays addresses this issue and gives a unique, African perspective on the history of democracy.
