After gaining independence in 1965, The Gambia enjoyed a prolonged spell of peace, stability and democratic governance for almost 30 years. But in 1994 the Jawara government was overthrown in a military coup. The Gambia's political context has been studied at length, and now this volume, the most comprehensive collection of scholarly writing on the country, seeks to broaden the analysis to examine a wide range of additional topics such as education, farming, policing and more. It aims to be a starting point for the future development of a research agenda for Gambian Studies.
