About the book

This book follows a sociologist's journey to South Africa to study the political and social views of a small community known as the Gujaratis. The Gujaratis were victimized prior to and during the Apartheid era yet managed to maintain a middle class economic status unlike any other nonwhite group. Through the analysis of Gandhi's influence during a 21 year span in South Africa and the interplay of underlying social dynamics before, during, and after the implementation of Apartheid, Klein assesses the conflicting pulls of separation from, and attachment to, the aims and aspirations of the African majority. His sociological analysis of the ideologies expressed in tape-recorded interview transcripts have relevance to today's class divisions in South Africa and elsewhere in this surprisingly entertaining read.
