In 1980 Nils Jorgensen's began his professional career as a photojournalist covering east Africa for Associated Press. He returned to London in 1982 and continued to cover a wide range of news events, again as a photojournalist for Rex Features. At this time he photographed in black and white; this being both required by picture editors and deemed to be the choice of 'serious' photographers. However, the advent of digital colour in the early 2000s energised his personal work and he became increasingly involved with street photography for which he is now best known. There is a lot of humour in Jorgensen's work. Another consistent thread is the surrealism of form that he finds in the everyday. Talking about his relationship to his street work Jorgensen has said; 'I think what excites me about street photography is that these things actually happened. This thing happened in front of me.'
