About the book

It's 1873. Modern climbing gear and Gore-Tex shells are a century away, but the high mountains still capture the imagination of intrepid climbers. To find out what this would have been like, Daniel Arnold spent four whole years retracing the precarious footsteps of his climbing forefathers. In the spirit of his predecessors, Arnold carried only rudimentary equipment with him: no ropes, no harness, no special climbing shoes. Amazingly, he survived to tell his tale - and theirs.
