About the book
First World War. David, a young schoolteacher, stands before the firing squad, sentenced to death as a deserter. In his last moments David reflects on his life and the circumstances that led to where he is now. How did he end up here? Is he the victim of circumstances or did he bring this on himself? Jan Vantoortelboom's unparalleled novel His Name Is David shows how guilt can ruin a life.
