Steeped in traditional African oral culture, whilst familiar with Western poetry techniques, Nigerian poet Ojaide's work bears testimony to his passionate struggle to achieve an ideal which encompasses both public and private dimensions. In this new collection he bemoans the many problems of Nigerian people but his exhortations are fortified by a strong current of hope. Tanure Ojaide has won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize for African Regions, the BBC Arts and Africa Poetry Award and the All-Africa Okigbo Prize for Poetry.
