Bernard Steinway, an unemployed, alienated, isolated Jewish intellectual is attempting to find a purpose in life following the collapse of his marriage. His search is both desperate and deluded as it moves from one self-inflicted disaster to another. He has a variety of aborted relationships, gets treatment from a therapist, finds a job but is then sacked and takes up with a guru. Only when he starts work at his father-in-law's office does he begin to feel restored but although he believes he has recovered his sanity, the rest of us know better.
