Like the author's earlier book, Long Hammering, this work continues the challenge of creating a more accurate image of the black American in the history of New York. Using an array of primary and secondary sources, including diary and oral recordings, to carefully examine the black American presence in New York from the early 17th through the late 20th centuries, the author argues convincingly for a more inclusive history, one that contains a substantially improved image of the black American community.
