The ERA study is a remarkable examination of children whose early life in Romanian institutions was unimaginably poor and who were then adopted into English families with all the material, emotional and social advantages this usually brings. The study followed these children over 17 years to track their progress and understand the influence of both their poor start and their later advantage. The paper considers the policy and practice implications of what has been learned through this vital study.
