About the book

Divided by 40 years, Rhodri, a hill farmer and poet, and Owne, a doctor taking leave from his London practice, live in different parts of the same mountain. Each man knows a mute; each begins to ponder the vast complexities of language. If no-one listens, their efforts are of no consequence. A distinctively different and spirited novel and a touching, very human story. Previous novels by the same author include 'Rosie' published by Hamish Hamilton in 1988 and 'Devotions', published by Chatto in 1986.
