The compelling voices of South Koreans who dedicated their lives to the democratisation movement can be heard in this volume. Many have served prison terms, others even perished. From the early 1960s to the late 1980s, the movement toppled the authoritarian regime and ushered in a parliamentary democracy in 1987. It also produced an impressive array of documents including manifestos that were read out before demonstrations; newsletters; pamphlets; statements of appeal to judges, which were smuggled out of prison; letters written while in prison; and poems, among other writings.
