About the book
Kikataka, whose first book in English, Ashes, saw the hardboiled ethic at work in the gangster world, uses the same perspective to subtle effect in this story of an artists quest for growth. The message is that one's stance towards the world affects one's art. The hardboiled is an aesthetic as well as an ethic. As one of Japan's most revered novelists (none of his 100+ novels have gone out of print) Winter Sleep should appeal to anyone who is a fan of the mystery genre or those who have a taste for art.
